Biography
Alexander Petrovich Burago was born on March 4 ( 16 ), 1846 in Kharkov [2] .
During the Russo-Turkish War, he distinguished himself in the battle of Plovdiv : performing the reconnaissance mission set by General Gurko , captain Burago entered the city of Plovdiv with a combined squadron of 63 life dragoons in the late night of January 3 (15), 1878 . There he discovered that the Turks were already leaving the city and partly heading east along the railway, partly to Stanimaku . Burago with a squadron moved to the station and overtook the retreating enemy groups, opened fire on them. More than a thousand Nizams and Circassians Suleiman Pasha fled, leaving all Turkish correspondence, a telegraph apparatus, two guns and a lot of ammunition. Life-dragoons captured 56 prisoners.
At 0:45 on January 4 (16), 1878, Burago reported to General Gurko that Plovdiv had been cleared of the Turks. For these actions, on February 27 ( March 11 ), 1878 the captain of the Life Guards of the Dragoon Regiment was awarded the Order of St. George IV class [3] :
| In retribution for the distinction shown in the battle of Philippopolis, January 3, 1878, where, with a hunter squadron, crossing the ford across the Maritsa River, he moved into the city, while still being occupied by the Turkish Division, and entered into a shootout with almost 25 times the strongest the enemy. |
Now on the 10th kilometer of the way from Plovdiv to Pazardzhik stands a monument to the liberators of Plovdiv - a squadron of 63 life-dragoons under the command of captain Burago.
Died of tuberculosis on the island of Madeira . He was buried at the Tikhvin cemetery of the Alexander Nevsky Lavra [2] .
