History

The hill got its name thanks to Catherine II , who in 1789, accompanied by her retinue, traveled along the Vyshnevolotsky water system , in particular along the Msta River from Borovichi to Veliky Novgorod. At the end of the journey, the empress presented the boat (yacht) with all the furnishings to the Novgorod nobility . In 1811, a special building was built on this hill, in which the Empress's gift was placed. The construction leader was the leader of the Novgorod noblemen Obolyaninov.

The original imperial gift was lost back in the 19th century, "part of the time, and most importantly of careless storage." It was replaced by a duplicate, which gave an approximate idea of the original.

In 1917, the Novgorod Yacht Club accepted for storage parts of the boat, and the building itself was transferred to the People’s House for presentations, lectures and other similar events. In the 20s. last century, the Aviation Museum was located here. The historic building suffered during the Great Patriotic War , having lost a roof and ceilings, however, it was destroyed to the ground already in the post-war period.

In 1974 , according to the decision of the Council of Ministers of the RSFSR , the Victory Monument was erected on Catherine Hill. The authors are sculptors G.V. Neroda , A. Filippova, architects A. Dushkin, A. Saykovsky. The opening of the monument took place on January 20, 1974 [1] .
