Biography
Born into a peasant family. In his youth, with his family moved to Ternopil, where he studied at the Ukrainian gymnasium. He was fond of music and theater, attended performances of the society " Russian conversation ", led by Joseph Stadnik . When during the First World War, Les Kurbas created the Ternopil Theater Evenings in the city, Bortnik dropped out of the gymnasium and entered the stage. He played in the plays of Karpenko-Kary and Kvitka-Osnovyanenko.
In the revolutionary years with Kurbas he moved to Kiev. In 1921, he headed the Kiidramte Theater in Belotserkovsky, which in 1922 joined the creative association Berezil . He studied and worked in the director's laboratory " Berezilya " (1923-1928). In 1926, together with the theater moved to Kharkov. Bortnik’s performances at Berezil showed that he was formed as a mature independent master. In 1927, under the auspices of " Berezil " in Kharkov, the Small Form Theater "The Merry Proletarian " was created, headed by Bortnik (1927-1930).
Subsequently, the director headed the Kharkov Theater of Musical Comedy (1930-1934), the Dnepropetrovsk Shevchenko Theater (1934-1936), the Kharkov Theater of the Revolution (1936-1937). On charges of nationalism in 1937 He was arrested and soon shot. Rehabilitated in 1960.
