City to them. October 6 ( Medina-Sittat-Oktober , Arab. مدينة ستة اكتوبر ) is a city in Egypt , about 20 km southwest of Cairo , on the left bank of the Nile . It was the center of the province on October 6, 2008–2011. Until 2008, and also since 2011, it was part of the province of Giza . The population is 154,093 people. The total area of the city is 97.4 thousand faddans (400 km²). The newly built modern city is part of Greater Cairo . Several universities with a large number of students.

History
The city was founded in 1979 by the decree of the President of Egypt, Anwar Sadat , number 504. It was named after the successful military operations of Egypt at the beginning of the Doomsday War of 1973. In April 2008, the city was declared the administrative center of the province on October 6 .
