Saint Lebuin (Lebuinus, Lebuin, Lebwin, Liafwin (e)), nicknamed the vine leaf, was originally from England . He was a monk from Ripon Monastery of St. Wilfrid , Bishop of York . Following the great preachers, Saints Boniface , Willibrord and others, after the ordination, Saint Lebuin went to Germany in 754 . He arrived in Utrecht , where he was received by St. Gregory , Bishop of Utrecht . He sent Saint Lebuin to Overijssel , which is on the border with Westphalia , giving him as comrades Marhelm ( en: Marchelm , Marcellinus), the future saint, disciple of St. Willibrord. There, in Wilpe (Wilp, Voorst , Wilpa), a small chapel was erected on the west coast of IJssel ( en: IJssel ). By his prayers, many turned to Christ's faith, including from the nobles. Therefore, it soon became necessary to build a large temple in Deventer, on the east bank of the river.

This caused discontent among the pagans: having gathered, they burned the temple and scattered the Christians.

Saint Lebuin went to the Gentiles, gathered in Marklo ( Marklo ) near Weser to the national assembly ( Allthing ). His performance there is described in detail in his Life . It earned the respect of the Westphalian Saxons , so he was allowed to leave their assembly alive.

Saint Lebuin returned to Deventer, where he restored the church. There he died and was buried in her. Soon followed by the raid of the Saxons, who again burned the temple. It was restored by St. Ludger .
