The exposition of the gallery consists mainly of portraits of famous Scots - rulers, national heroes, poets , revolutionaries and other historical figures. For example, the gallery features portraits of the poet Robert Burns , actor Sean Connery , the philosopher David Hume , the writer Walter Scott , Queen Mary Stuart, and others.
The gallery building in the neo-gothic style was built in 1885-1890 by the design of Robert Rowand Anderson . From April 2009 until the end of 2011 the gallery is closed for restoration. [2]
