Forsyth was the host of World Survival in the 1970s. In the 2000s, he participated in the annual Christmas program (reading fairy tales to children), which was filmed near the nursing home where he lived in the Danish village of Solvang , California , north of Los Angeles .
Biography
Childhood and Youth
John Lincoln Freund, the eldest of three children, was born in Pence Grove , New Jersey . Parents: mother - Blanche Matherson (née Blom), father - Samuel Jeremiah Freund, stock broker [5] [6] . Forsyth grew up in Brooklyn , NY , where his father worked as a businessman on Wall Street during the Great Depression of the 1930s.
At 16, Forsyth graduated from Abraham Lincoln High School in Brooklyn and began attending North Carolina University in Chapel Hill. [7] In 1936 , when he was 18 years old, he became a sports commentator at the Ebbets Field Stadium in Brooklyn , New York , thereby reinforcing his childhood love of baseball .
Film career and military service
Contrary to his wishes, Forsyth began his acting career only at the suggestion of his father. He met actress Parker McCormick (December 1918 - July 1980 ), and they got married in 1939 . The couple had a son, Dall, in 1943 , but soon Forsyth divorced his wife.
Thanks to the film company Warner Bros. Forsyth successfully played several small roles. As a result, he got a small role in the film “ Destination Tokyo ” ( 1943 ). Leaving a television career to participate in World War II , he joined the US Air Force . In 1944, Forsyth played on stage and starred in the eponymous film " Winged Victory "; then he worked with wounded soldiers who had problems with speech.
Also in 1943, Forsyth met Julie Warren , who first worked in the theater, and later became an independent successful actress, achieving a role on Broadway in the musical Around the World . Warren became Forsyth's second wife, and in the early 1950s the couple had two daughters - Page and Brooke.
In 1947, Forsyth entered the primary school of the Actors Studio (which later became very prestigious), where he met other promising young actors, including Marlon Brando and Julie Harris . At this time, Forsyth played on Broadway in the plays Mr. Roberts and Tea Ceremony .
In 1955, Alfred Hitchcock offered Forsyth a role in the film " Trouble with Harry, " which also starred Shirley MacLane for the first time. Judging by the box office, the film was unsuccessful, and Forsyth decided that working in the cinema was too hard a profession.
Television career
Single Father
In 1957, Forsyth got the main role in the sitcom " Single Father ", which went on the channel " CBS ". His hero, Bentley Gregg, is a playboy lawyer who became a father to his niece Kelly (the role was played by Noreen Corcoran ) after the death of her parents. The show immediately appeared in the first lines of rating impressions, and the next season was already broadcast on the NBC channel, and in the autumn of 1961 - on the ABC channel.
In various episodes, Forsyth worked with such promising actresses as Mary Tyler Moore , Barbara Eden , Donna Douglas , Sally Kellerman , Sue En Langdon and Linda Evans (who immediately began to coquet with the actor despite the fact that he was much older than her). The 1961 season of the Single Father sitcom was broadcast on the ABC channel, but was soon closed due to low ratings.
After the “ Single Father ”
In the early 1960s, Forsythe again began to appear in television films, including " Kitten with a Whip " ( 1964 ) and " Cold-blooded Murder " ( 1967 ). He also tried to release two new television programs: The John Forsyth Show on the NBC with the participation of Guy Marx , Elsa Lanchester , Anne B. Davis , Peggy Lipton and their daughters - Page and Brooke ( 1965 - 1966 ) and " To Rome With Love "on the CBS Channel ( 1969 - 1971 ) with the participation of Walter Brennan . Between 1971 and 1977, Forsyth was a leading syndicated series on the nature of the World of Survival. He was also an announcer in commercials dedicated to Mikelob beer from the 1970s to 1985 , that is, during the “weekend that created the Mikelob era”.
Charlie's Angels
Forsyth began his 13-year collaboration with Aaron Spelling in 1976 , when he received the role of the mysterious invisible millionaire and private detective Charles Townsend in the crime drama Charlie's Angels ( 1976 - 1981 ). Townsend’s voice was heard only from the speakerphone, who gave instructions to the Angels regarding their mission in the episode. The series was a huge success - much larger than before on the TV series " Single Father " - and was shown in more than 90 countries. Forsyth quickly became the highest paid actor on television.
During this period, Forsyth invested a lot of money in purebred horses participating in horse racing - this was his hobby. Having gained respect among famous people, in 1972 he became a member of the board of directors of the Hollywood Park racecourse and remained with him for more than 25 years.
In 1979, due to heart problems, Forsyth underwent shunting four times. The operations were very successful, and he returned to work in the TV series Charlie's Angels , and also starred in the judicial drama Justice for All the same year. By 1980, the rating for Charlie's Angels was falling, but Forsyth remained in the series.
Dynasty
In 1981 , closer to the end of the filming of Charlie's Angels , Forsyth was unexpectedly selected to be the insidious head of the family of Blake Carrington in the Dynasty series instead of George Peppard . Aaron Spelling 's Dynasty series was a response from the ABC channel to the highly successful Dallas series broadcast on the CBS channel. Between 1985 and 1987, Forsyth also played the role of Blake Carrington in the series Dynasty 2: The Colby Family .
The series " Dynasty " became for Forsyth the pinnacle of an acting career, and his role only confirmed this. Forsyth and his hero became icons of the pop culture of the 1980s, which contributed to the recognition of Forsyth as one of the most successful men in Hollywood. The series based on real life covered topics such as family feud, shootings of foreign revolutionaries, illegitimate children, sex, drugs, and also showed a wasteful lifestyle and spectacular clothing of the characters.
On the set of the Dynasty series, Forsyth met again with actress Linda Evans , who was invited to the Single Father series, who replaced Angie Dickinson as the compassionate and caring young wife of Blake Crystal . The love relationship between Foresight and Evans was obvious, and since they were the main married couple in the series, they were constantly discussed in various talk shows and the media. Throughout the series, Forsyth, Evans, and Collins advertised perfumes called Dynasty [8] .
The series " Dynasty " ended in 1989 , the last was the ninth season. Forsyth was the only actor who starred in all 220 episodes.
Forsyth was nominated three times to receive an Emmy Award from 1982 to 1984 in the nomination "Best Actor in a Drama Series", but luck passed him by; six times he became a nominee for the Golden Globe Award, which he won twice; He was also nominated five times for the Soap Opera Digest Award and won twice. At the same time, Forsyth celebrated the 45th anniversary of his wedding.
“ Powerful of this world ”
In 1992 , after a three-year hiatus, Forsyth again began shooting in the sitcom of Norman Lear "The Powerful of the World, " broadcast on the NBC channel. The series did not occupy high lines in the ratings, and a year later it was closed.
Career and personal life after the 1990s
On August 15, 1994, Forsyth's wife (née Julie Warren ) died at the age of 74 at the hospital, with whom he lived 51 years [9] , after he made a difficult decision for himself to turn off her life support system - for a long time she was in a coma due to lung problems. In 2002, Forsyth married entrepreneur Nicole Carter, who was 22 years younger than him. Forsyth has one son, two daughters, six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren from previous marriages. Forsyth again played the role of Charlie Townsend , but already in the remake of Charlie's Angels ( 2000 ) and in the sequel to Charlie's Angels 2: Just Forward ( 2003 ). In addition to the family, Forsyth was engaged in his own art gallery.
In 2005, actor Bartholomew John played the role of Forsythe in the film “ Dynasty: Behind the Scenes of Sex, Greed and Intrigue, ” based on the fiction and backstage intrigues of the filming of the series “ Dynasty ” [10] .
On May 2, 2006, Dynasty Reunion: Catfights & Caviar was screened with Forsyth and other Dynasty actors such as Linda Evans , Joan Collins , Pamela Sue Martin , Al Corley , Gordon Thomson and Katherine Oxenberg . This 1-hour film was broadcast on the CBS channel.
In October 2006, there were publications in the press that Forsyth was being treated for intestinal cancer [11] , and in November of the same year he was discharged from the hospital [12] .
Death
John Forsyth died on April 1, 2010 of pneumonia in Santa Ynez , California . His wife Nicole died six weeks later, on May 11, 2010.
