Biography
He was born in Rochester, New York , in the family of a German preacher who taught at the Rochester Theological Seminary (Rochester Theological Seminary). Rauschenbush himself also studied in this seminary, where during his studies he leaned toward the views of liberal Christianity . In 1891-1892, Rauschenbush studied economics at the University of Berlin and industrial relations in the industrial sector in England. In 1902, Rauschenbush was appointed professor of church history at the Rochester Seminary. [one]
Important elements of the understanding of Christianity Rauschenbush were such concepts as the Kingdom of God and the Social Gospel . According to the views of Rauschenbush, the main goal of Christianity is the spread of the Kingdom of God not through a fiery and active sermon, but through a Christ-like life. According to him, “Christianity, by its nature, is revolutionary,” since the Kingdom of God is “not in the attainment by individuals of the heavens, but in transforming life on earth in harmony with Heaven.”
As a result of such an understanding of Christianity, Rauschenbush actively opposed such phenomena of social injustice as child labor , the disparity between wages and the work performed, the rapid enrichment of barons and burglars , and harshly criticized ecclesiastical institutions for ignoring and sometimes sanctifying such facts. He demanded improved working conditions and called for the participation of Christian ministers in the resolution of social, especially labor, conflicts.
Rauschenbush outlined his views in his works Christianity and Social Crisis (1907), Christianization of the Social System (1912), Social Principles of Jesus (1916), and Theology of the Social Gospel (1917).
Impact
The views of Rauschenbush and his concept of the Social Gospel had a significant influence on the transformation of social conditions within American society, and on the more active social position of Christian churches and ministers. Under the significant influence of his views were Martin Luther King and Desmond Tutu . Thanks to the social position of Rauschenbush, his children found themselves in the ranks of the social democratic movement, which was influenced by Leo Trotsky . Rauschenbush's ideas also influenced his grandson, the famous American philosopher Richard Rorty [2] .
