Biography
Henri Montand Burton is the son and student of the conductor and composer Pierre Montand Burton [4] .
Later he learned to play the violin with Jean-Baptiste Ray , as the composer improved himself under the direction of Antonio Saccini . Since 1782 , he played the violin in the Grand Opera Orchestra [4] .
He made his debut in 1784 with the opera The First Sailor ( French: Le Premier navigateur ) and was later known primarily as an opera composer. The greatest success fell on the opera The Horrors of the Monastery ( French Les Rigueurs du cloître ; 1790 ), which laid the foundation for the characteristic opera genre of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries — the opera of salvation . Among the 48 operas of Burton, Montano and Stefania ( French: Montano et Stéphanie ; 1799 ), staged for the first time in the USA, Alina, Queen of the Golconda ( French Aline reine de Golconde ; 1803 ) and Francoise de Foix ( French Françoise de Foix ; 1809 , on the plot of the life of the semi-official mistress of King Francis I ). In addition, Burton owns a number of alterations made for the Paris opera scene, in particular, the processing of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s opera “Everybody Does That” ( 1813 ). In 1810 - 1815 , Burton directed the Paris Opera Choir.
In addition to opera, Burton wrote sacred music, and during the period of the French Revolution, patriotic hymns and marches . He was a professor of harmony at the Paris Conservatory from the day it was founded in 1795 , and in 1817 he occupied the department of composition, which was freed up after the death of Etienne Meil . Burton owns a number of works on harmony, as well as the pamphlet On Mechanical Music and Philosophical Music ( fr. De la musique mécanique et de la musique philosophique ; 1826 ), directed against Joakino Rossini, who was gaining fame in France.
Henri Montand Burton died on April 22, 1844 in his hometown [4] .
