Biography
Born in the family of a military republican. In his youth, he intended to become an architect [8] . He began his career in cinema in 1936 (he took the second name of his mother, Arambilie Rey as a surname), starring in episodic roles. Rey played the first notable role in the film Eugenia de Montijo (1944). Thanks to the spectacular appearance and the set voice, he quickly secured for himself the role of a “hero-lover” starring in several notable entertaining films of the 40s; for the film “Madness of Love” (Locura de amor, 1948) directed by Juan de Orduny, he received the award as the best actor of the year.
Since the 1950s, he has been revealed as a master of psychological and comedy cinema. The role of the actor in the film Juan Bardem "Comedians" (Cómicos, 1954) drew the attention of critics. Ray’s creative abilities were truly manifested in collaboration with the classic of cinema Luis Bunuel in such films as Viridiana (Viridiana, 1961), Tristana (Tristana, 1970), as well as in the later works The Modest Charm of the Bourgeoisie (Le charme discret de la bourgeoisie, 1972) and “ This Obscure Object of Desire ” (Cet obscur objet du desir, 1977). [9]
In the Spanish cinema of the 70s, Rey mainly played respectable old men in love (“Anthem” 1976, “Defiance”, 1978). He starred a lot in European and American cinema. The result of his long creative biography (more than 200 films in cinema and on television) in 1991 was the role of Don Quixote in the 10-episode television movie “ Don Quixote of Miguel de Cervantes ” by Gutierrez Aragon .
From 1992 to 1994, Fernando Rey was president of the Spanish Film Academy . [10]
Died in 1994 from cancer.
