David was born on April 18, 1971 in the Scottish city of Bathgate ( West Lothian , Scotland ). He grew up in Ralston, Renfrewshire , where his father, Alexander “Sandy” MacDonald, was the local Presbyterian priest of the Scottish church. He grew up with his brother Blair, who is 6 years older than him, and sister Karen, who is 8 years older. David's maternal great-grandfather and great-grandmother, William and Agnes Blair, were staunch Protestants from Derry in Northern Ireland and were among the signatories of the Ulster Agreement. William was a member of the Great Orange Lodge of Ireland.

Tennant’s maternal grandfather, footballer Archie MacLeod, met the daughter of William and Agnes, Nelly Blair, when playing with the Derry City Football Club.

After graduating from high school, David entered the .
