Novikov gearing , helical gearing , Novikov gear - mechanical gear , alternative to involute gearing, proposed by the Soviet engineer M. L. Novikov in 1954 [1] for gears .
The teeth of the wheels in the end section are outlined by circles of close radii. The tooth contact area does not move along the tooth profile, as in spur involute gearing, but along it. The pressure angle and speed of movement does not change.
There are two types of Novikov gears:
- with one line of engagement (OLS), polar or pole.
- with two lines of engagement (DLZ) are pre-polar.

Advantages and disadvantages of Novikov gearing over involute gearing
Benefits
- Higher load capacity for contact stresses and bending stresses (1.5 ... 1.7 times).

- Higher gear ratios [1] .
- The transmission is less sensitive to distortions of the gears due to the point contact of the teeth [1] .
disadvantages
- Novikov gearing is very sensitive to a change in the center distance , therefore, it requires a higher accuracy of wheel installation, a higher rigidity of the shafts and their support;
- In gears with OLZ, a different tool is required for cutting the teeth of the wheel and gear, since they have a different profile;
