Biography

Diana Halfin was born in Brussels in 1946 into a wealthy Jewish family. Her father, Leon (Lipa Shmaevich) Khalfin (1912—?), Was born and raised in Chisinau , from where in 1929 he moved to Brussels [1] [2] . In 1942, he, based on false documents in the name of Leon Desmet, settled in Switzerland , where he spent the war years , and after the war he opened an enterprise selling electric goods, which soon turned into the largest electronic lamp company in Belgium (as a result, Leon Halfin became known as " Monsieur Lampe Electronique "). [3] [4] Diana Halfin's mother, Lilian Nahmias, came from a Sephardic family from Thessaloniki , from where she was deported to the Auschwitz concentration camp in 1943 with her parents. [5] Leon Halfin and Lilian Nahmias married in 1946.

Parents broke up when Diana was 13 years old, and she studied at boarding schools in Spain , the UK and Switzerland , then settled with her mother in Geneva . [6] Diana met her future husband, Prince Egon von Furstenberg , when she entered the economics department of the University of Geneva in 1967. Egon belonged to the younger branch of the Swabian princely family . They married in 1969, but divorced three years later. They had a daughter, Tatyana, and a son, Alexander. Since 1985 she lived in Paris .

Diana von Furstenberg opened her first line of designer clothing for women in 1970. Subsequently, she also engaged in the production of cosmetics.

In 2001, Diana von Furstenberg married American billionaire and media mogul Barry Diller and the following year became a US citizen.

In 2002, Diana von Fürstenberg published with her own introduction and opening remarks by Serge Klarsfeld the recollections she discovered of her aunt (father’s sister) - French gynecologist Sima Weisman (nee Wassermann, 1903, Orhei of the Bessarabian province - 1997 , Paris ) - “Parmi les cris, un chant s'élève: le témoignage exceptionnel d'une femme médecin déportée à Auschwitz "on deportation from Paris and imprisonment in Auschwitz ( English edition -" A Jewish Doctor in Auschwitz: The Testimony of Sima Vaisman ", 2005; Italian edition - L'inferno sulla terra: La testimonianza di una dotoressa deportata ad Auschwitz, 2005).

In August 2006, Diana von Furstenberg was appointed president of the prestigious American organization in the fashion world - the American Council of Fashion Designers . [7]
