Biography

Born in a Jewish family, in Lemberg (now Lviv ), in 1896. He studied at the Lviv Institute of Arts, the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow (1918-1922), then in Berlin with A. Arkhipenko .

In the years 1919-1923 exhibited in Lviv, a member of artistic associations. From 1923 he lived in Paris. Participant of exhibitions of the Salon of Independent, Autumn Salon, Salon Tuileries in Paris . Together with Alfred Aberdam , Joachim Weingart and Leon Weisberg created the Group of Four ( Le Groupe des Quatre ). The art forms represented by this group were part of the expressionist movement of the Paris School . The group existed until 1925, together they were exhibited in 1925 in the gallery Au Sacre du Printemps .

In 1935 he emigrated from France to the United States, lived in New York.

In 1942-1943 - President of the Federation of Contemporary Artists and Sculptors (USA).

Member of the Corcoran Gallery Biennials (1939-1957; gold medal), exhibitions at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia (1941-1966; gold medal). Winner of the Andrew Carnegie Prize at the New York National Academy of Design (1955) and the Alfred Yurzhikovsky Foundation Prize (1967) [1] .

Proceedings

The artist's works were exhibited at the Carnegie Institute in Pittsburgh, the University of Nebraska, the Cleveland Museum of Art in Ohio, the American University in Washington, the University of Iowa, the Association of American Artists, the Institute of Art in Chicago, the National Institute of Arts and Literature, the Polish Institute of Arts and Sciences, the Metropolitan Museum of Art , The Whitney Museum of American Art, galleries.
