The movement for the voluntary extinction of humanity - more commonly known as VHEMT (pronounced as Wiemant [ 'viːəmənt ] [2] , abbreviated from the English. Voluntary Human Extinction Movement ) - a public environmental movement whose goal is the voluntary extinction of humanity by refusing to reproduce [3 ] [4] . The basic idea of the movement is that it will be better for the Earth ’s biosphere if humanity does not exist [4] [5] . According to supporters of this movement, the human species is a kind of “exotic invader”, the population of which has got out of control , is a threat to planet Earth and other species of animals and plants living on it; and only the complete disappearance of the species Homo sapiens will restore the natural order of things and the harmony of nature [3] [6] .

History

The movement was founded by Les Knight ( Eng. Les Knight or Les U. Knight , recalls Eng. Let's unite - "let's unite") in 1991 [3] [4] in the USA , the city of Portland , Oregon . Knight is the owner of vhemt.org and the “voice” of the movement [3] [4] [7] . Although Les Knight himself claims that he did not establish the movement, he merely gave it a name. [8]

Les Knight became interested in the environmental movement in the 1970s after returning from Vietnam , becoming a member of the Zero Population Growth movement, and made himself a vasectomy when he was twenty [3] [6] [9] .

The ideology of movement

The motto of the movement is "To live long and happily die out." [10] The movement does not advocate murder , suicide [3] , mass sterilization and other violent methods; instead, it is proposed to abandon further reproduction of the human race [6] [11] .

The movement has three levels of support:

  1. Volunteers ( English volunteers, extinctionists ) [2]
  2. Supporters ( Eng. Supporters) [12] - people who do not believe that the extinction of humanity is necessary, but nevertheless are supporters of controlling the size of humanity and for this reason refused to give birth to new children.
  3. Potential proponents of the idea of movement.

VHEMT does not consider itself as an organization , since it does not have any of its own structures [2] . The movement has no official representation.
