Edinburgh University is a state university in the capital of Scotland, the city of Edinburgh . The sixth oldest in Britain , opened in 1583. He owns many buildings in the old part of the city. Structurally consists of three colleges , including 20 schools. Member of the Russell Group and the League of European Research Universities [1] [2] .

History
The University of Scotland was led by , a graduate of St. Andrews . [3] The charter for the establishment of the university was signed by King James VI on April 14, 1582. It is the first university in the country to open without a papal bull.
The heyday of the university fell on the Age of Enlightenment , when, due to the large number of outstanding humanitarians, Edinburgh was called northern Athens. The faculty of law was founded in 1707, the faculty of arts in 1708, and the medical faculty in 1726.
From 1953 to 2010, the chancellor of the university was Philip, Duke of Edinburgh , who was replaced in 2011 by his daughter Anna.
In 1985, in accordance with the will of the famous British writer Arthur Köstler , the was opened at the faculty of psychology [4] [5] [6] .
In 2002, in the course of the restructuring, nine of the university's faculties were transformed into three colleges, and 22 departments into schools. In 2011, the university merged with Edinburgh College of Art.
