The tunnel is located on the territory of the Nizhneilimsky district of the Irkutsk region , within the Lena-Angarsk plateau of the Central Siberian plateau , at the western neck of the Korshunikha-Angarskaya station. The tunnel consists of two parallel single-track threads, length - 950.5 m and laid in sedimentary rocks with a seismicity of 6 points. [one]

The first string of the tunnel was built in 1968-1973 by the tunnel detachment of Gidrospetsstroy .

With the increase in the volume of rail transportation in the BAM, it became clear that the single-line tunnel could not cope with the flow, in addition, its high water cut caused a lot of problems. In 2004, Bamtonnelstroy began construction of the second string of the tunnel. The development of the tunnel was carried out in the mining method using lining of reinforced concrete . When laying the track for the first time on the Russian Railways network, damper mats were used, which made it possible to reduce the level of vibration and increase the speed of trains. On June 20, 2008, the second track was put into operation [1] [2] .

At the end of 2009, the first string of the tunnel was closed for reconstruction [3] . During the repair, grouting of the enclosing space, strengthening of the rocks, replacement of the lining , and reconstruction of tracks using damper mats were made. In early November 2012, the old thread of the tunnel was put into operation after reconstruction [4] [5] .
