Group History
The first group of It's a Beautiful Day included six people: David LaFlamme (violin, vocals), his wife Linda ( born Linda LaFlamme , keyboards ), Patti Santos ( born Pattie Santos , vocals ), Hal Wagenet ( born Hal Wagenet , guitar ), Mitchell Holman ( born Mitchell Holman , bass guitar ) and Val Fuentes ( born Val Fuentes , drums ). The group debuted in June 1969 with the album It's a Beautiful Day , released by Columbia Records , [1] , which rose to # 47 on Billboard 200 [2] . The single “White Bird”, which became a radio hit and a business card of the group (but did not enter Billboard Hot 100 , stop at # 118) had a certain success. [~ 1]
The debut album was warmly greeted with criticism, but almost immediately the group began to change the composition, predetermined simplification of the sound. The marriage of David and Linda LaFlamme broke up, and Linda left the band (at Titus' Mother), replaced by keyboard player Fred Webb . In this lineup, It's a Beautiful Day recorded their second album Marrying Maiden , in which several guest musicians took part, including Jerry Garcia from the Grateful Dead . This album, released in June 1970, rose to # 28 on the Billboard 200 and to # 45 in the UK [3] [4] .
Shortly after the release of the second album, Holman and Wagenet left the group, replaced by Tom Fowler and Bill Gregory. After that, It's a Beautiful Day released two more studio albums: Choice Quality Stuff / Anytime (1971) and It's a Beautiful Day ... Today (1973), as well as one live album. In 1973, as a result of a conflict over royalties, the founder of the group, David LaFlamme, was ousted from the ensemble, and in 1974 it broke up, releasing a compilation of 1001 Nights [1] .
LaFlamme began his solo career in 1977 with White Bird. Patti Santos died on December 14, 1989 in a car accident [1] .
In 1997, It's a Beautiful Day reunited, but because of a conflict with the manager, the name was changed to David LaFlamme Band. The band, led by LaFlamme and Fuentes, continues to tour (in particular, with Jefferson Starship , 2007). In 1998, the two first and most successful discs of the group - It's a Beautiful Day and Marrying Maiden - were reissued as a double album [5] .
