Short Biography

He graduated from Oxford University in 1671, three years later as a missionary he was sent from England to North America - first to the West Indies ( Barbados , Grenada ), then to Virginia . He studied the nature of Virginia , dealing mainly with plants, as well as insects and mollusks [4] .

One of the goals of his research was to collect previously unknown plants for the botanical gardens of England - the Oxford Botanic Garden ( Eng. University of Oxford Botanic Garden ), as well as for the recently created (in 1676 ) created Chelsea Botanical Garden ( Eng. Chelsea Physic Garden ) Among the plants, which thanks to Banister began to grow in gardens, are Magnolia virginia ( Magnolia virginiana ), Dicentra napellus ( Dicentra cucullaria ), American Scarlet Oak ( Quercus coccinea ), Likvidambar resinous ( Liquidambar styraciflua ) [4] .

In 1680, Banister 's essay Plantae Virginicae (Virginia Plants) was published [5] .

The catalog of plants collected by Banister was published in the second volume of Historia generalis plantarum ( 1688 ), a three-volume work by the English botanist John Ray ( 1627 - 1705 ) [4] . John Ray wrote about Banister as follows: Eruditissimus vir et consummatissimus botanicus [6] ("the most educated person and the most perfect botanist").

John Banister died on the banks of the Roanoke River, collecting plants [4] . Death occurred as a result of a gunshot wound, but whether this was a murder or he died from an accident is unknown. According to other sources, Banister died, tearing while collecting plants from a cliff [5] .

The work of Banister Natural history of Virginia , on which he worked from 1678 until his death, remained unfinished.

In Honor of Banister

In honor of John Banister, the English botanist William Hauston ( 1695 - 1733 ) named the genus of plants Bannisteria [5] . Carl Linnaeus included this genus in his work Species plantarum ("Plant Species") under the name Banisteria . Since, from the point of view of the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature, the scientific names of plants published before May 1, 1753 are not considered truly made public, Linnaeus is formally the author of this name and it is written as Banisteria L. (1753) . Now the name Banisteria L. (1753) is considered as a heterotypic synonym for the correct name Heteropterys Kunth (1822) , nom. cons. from the Malpigian family.

In recognition of the merits of John Banister, Banisteria Magazine, also published in Virginia, has also been named.

John Banister has an indirect relation to the name of another genus of the Malpigian family - Banisteriopsis CBRob. (1910) . This genus got its name for its resemblance to plants from the genus Banisteria L. ( Greek όψις - similar).
