The wooden (with brick details) single-storey mansion of Sergei Sokolov with a stable and garden was built by the architect in 1880-84. The cartouche on the pediment of the building, decorated with sculptures in the form of a compass, ruler and pen, pointed to the profession of the owner (was destroyed during a demolition attempt in 2013 [2] ).
After the revolution, the Krasnopresnensky orphanage was located in the mansion, then the passport office and the housing office were located there. It was abandoned in 2006, brought by its owner, CJSC Priority Investment Company, to a ruined state [3] . In the fall of 2012, the roof of the mansion collapsed [4] . Contrary to public protests, the city authorities decided to demolish the house for the sake of making room for the construction of a 7-storey complex with an underground parking lot [5] . On February 19, 2014, the “tolerable commission” decided to demolish the mansion, and its chairman, Deputy Mayor of Moscow, Marat Khusnullin , demanded that the demolition be started immediately [1] . In turn, the historian and coordinator of the public movement “Arhnadzor” Rustam Rakhmatullin said that vandalism continues in the city and “it’s absolutely impossible to explain how an impressive mansion, which is part of the preserved historical environment of the alley, can appear on the spot” [6] .
Despite the active opposition of the city defenders, in June 2014 the old mansion was demolished [7] .
