Elsasser number

The Ellasser number ( El or Λ ) is a similarity criterion in magnetohydrodynamics , which determines the relationship between the magnetic force and the Coriolis force . It is defined as follows:

El=ςB2ρΩ{\ displaystyle \ operatorname {El} \, = {\ frac {\ varsigma \, B ^ {2}} {\ rho \, \ Omega}}} {\ displaystyle \ operatorname {El} \, = {\ frac {\ varsigma \, B ^ {2}} {\ rho \, \ Omega}}}

Where

  • B{\ displaystyle B} B - magnetic field induction ;
  • Ω{\ displaystyle \ Omega} \ Omega - the angular velocity of rotation of the planet;
  • ρ{\ displaystyle \ rho} \ rho - density ;
  • ς{\ displaystyle \ varsigma} \ varsigma - electrical conductivity .
