Club career

Burnley

Connelly began his career at the St. Helens Town Club in the Lancashire Championship. In November 1956, the Burnley scouts attended the St. Helens match to evaluate another player, but were very impressed with Connelly's game and offered him first a temporary and then a permanent contract with Burnley, who at that time played in the highest England Championship Division. John's debut for the " burgundy " took place on March 11, 1957 in an away meeting with Leeds United . By the beginning of the 1958/59 season, Connelly had won a regular place in the club’s main squad, scoring 12 goals in 37 matches and becoming the team’s top scorer of the season.

Connelly played mainly on the right flank of the attack, but could play on the left. He had good ball control and speed to beat the extreme defenders and make an accurate cross or punch himself from any foot. His goal scores are very good for the winger: he scored 105 goals in 265 matches for Burnley.

In the 1959/60 season, Burnley won the championship of England, and Connelly played a decisive role in this, having scored 20 goals in 34 championship matches. Due to injury and joint surgery, he missed the most important final game of the championship against Manchester City , and was replaced by Trevor Meredith, who scored the winning goal in this match, which guaranteed Burnley the league title. However, Connelly received the medal of the champion of England.

In the next three seasons, Connelly continued to score goals, and Burnley took fourth, second and third places in the championship, respectively. In the 1961/62 season, “ burgundy ” not only took second place in the championship, but also reached the FA Cup final, in which they lost to Tottenham Hotspur with a score of 3: 1. Connelly played in the final on the right flank of the attack and received the FA Cup finalists medal. In the 1963/64 season, the talented Scottish winger Willy Morgan made his way to the main line-up of Burnley, because of which Connelly was forced to switch to the left flank (Morgan played on the right). In April 1964, John moved to Manchester United for 56,000 pounds . [2]

Manchester United

Connelly spent only two seasons at Manchester United, playing 113 matches and scoring 35 goals. United finished the 1963/64 season in second place, but already in the next 1964/65 season became the champion of England, and Connelly received his second champion medal. In the 1965/66 season, United took fourth place in the championship and dropped out of the European Cup in the semifinals. At the beginning of the 1966/67 season, Connelly moved for £ 40,000 to the Blackburn Rovers , who dropped out of the First Division.

Late Career

He played for Blackburn for another four seasons, but was able to help his club return to the top division. In May 1970, “Blackburn” released Connelly and he signed a contract with the club “ Bury ”, for which he played for another three years. In May 1973, Connelly ended his playing career.

He subsequently owned the Connelly's Plaice diner in Breerfield. Connelly was named among the 25 former Burnley players who hit the “wall of legends” at Turf Moore .

Team Career

Connelly made his England debut on October 17, 1959 in a match against Wales at Ninian Park . He became part of the England team, which went to Chile for the 1962 World Cup , but never played in this tournament. Four years later, he was included in the national team for the 1966 World Cup . He took part in the first game of England against Uruguay at Wembley , but the English played poorly, and the match ended in a goalless draw. In the following matches, the English head coach Alf Ramsey did not use Connelly and generally preferred to play without wingers. The match with Uruguay was Connelly's last game for the national team.

After completing the final match of 1966, only 11 players who entered the field received champion medals. The Football Association of England conducted a campaign to convince FIFA to award medals to all players included in the application for the World Cup. This campaign was successful, and on June 10, 2009, Connelly received a medal from the hands of Gordon Brown at the ceremony. [3]
