History
Sumter County Courthouse
Sumter County was formed in 1853. It was named after General Thomas Sumter, the hero of the War of Independence. In the past, and to some extent today, the district was nicknamed the “Pig District”. Most likely, this is due to the large number of wild pigs living in the county. Until now, pork hunting remains one of the favorite pastimes of the rural population.
