Kvitnitsky, Erast Ksenofontovich

Erast Ksenofontovich Kvitnitsky ( December 30, 1843 - October 3, 1907 ) was a cavalry general, a participant in the Turkestan campaigns and the Russian-Turkish war of 1877–78.

Biography

Erast Kvitnitsky was born on December 30, 1843, the son of the Vilna commandant, Lieutenant General KF Kvitnitsky . Educated in the Corps of Pages , from which he was released on June 16, 1860 by an ensign in the Life Guards Horse Grenadier Regiment .

Then he served in the Guards Horse Artillery , participated in the suppression of the Polish uprising of 1863 . August 30, 1865 promoted to lieutenant and March 28, 1866 - in the captains . At that time, he took a science course at the academies of the Mikhailovsky Artillery and Nikolaev General Staff .

At the beginning of 1872, Kvitnitsky was demoted by the court as a soldier and transferred to the Turkestan Military District . The Minister of War, D. A. Milyutin , described the events of an intsint that led to a trial as follows:

 The thing was that the staff captain Kvitnitsky had trouble with his comrades who decided to survive him from their midst; this quarrel ended with the fact that on November 26, 1872, Kvitnitsky struck the naked saber against Colonel Khlebnikov, for which he was tried. The Petersburg Military District Court, after a lengthy trial of all the details of the case in the sessions of February 8 and 9, sentenced the defendant to deprivation of all rights of the state and to the reference to the settlement in Siberia, but at the same time decided to petition the Emperor for perfect pardon (Milyutin's cursive - I. M.) Kvitnitsky, about the wrong actions of the commander of the Life Guards of the Horse-Rifle Brigade of Major-General Gubsky and ten officers to inform the authorities for further legal orders. " 

Milyutin then mentions his conflict with the Grand Dukes Nikolai Nikolayevich the Elder and Mikhail Nikolayevich , who took the side of Kvitnitsky.

 It ended with Kvitnitsky being demoted to the rank and file (soon afterwards, however, he was forgiven and served in army cavalry), Major General Gubsky was dismissed from his post, and some of the officers were transferred to army artillery, or they themselves retired. [one] 

In Central Asia, he was assigned to the 4th Turkestan battalion and took part in the Khiva campaign of 1873 and was awarded the Badge of Honor of the Military Order of the 4th and 3rd degrees and promoted to non-commissioned officer. Continuing his service in Central Asia, Kvitnitsky, under the command of his former classmate in the General Staff Academy M. D. Skobelev , distinguished himself during the conquest of the Kokand khanate and was awarded the Medal of Military Order of the 2nd degree.

On January 1, 1877, non-commissioned officer Kvitnitsky received the highest pardon for his military exploits, major was produced and transferred to the 5th Alexandria Hussars .

In the ranks of this regiment, Kvitnitsky took part in the Russian-Turkish war of 1877–7878 and was awarded the Order of the Holy Cross. Anna of the 3rd degree with swords and bow, of sv. Stanislaus 2 nd degree with swords and of sv. Vladimir 4th degree with swords and bow (all in 1877), he also received the rank of lieutenant colonel (December 19, 1877) and the colonel (in 1878 with seniority of December 20, 1877) and a golden sword with the inscription "For bravery" (October 24, 1878) [2] .

On January 23, 1883, Kvitnitsky was appointed commander of the 33rd Dragoon Izyum regiment , and from May 10, 1888 - commander of the 22nd Dragoon Novgorod regiment .

In 1883 he was awarded the Order of St.. Anna 2 nd degree, and in 1887 - the Order of St.. Vladimir 3rd degree.

With the production of October 17, 1891 in the Major-General Kvitnitsky was appointed commander of the 2nd Brigade of the 8th Cavalry Division. In 1895 he received the Order of St.. Stanislav 1st degree and in 1902 - the Order of St.. Anna 1 st degree.

On January 17, 1899, he was appointed commander of the 15th Cavalry Division, and on December 6, 1899, he was promoted to lieutenant general. Kvitnitsky held his last position on January 14, 1907, when he was dismissed from the cavalry with production to the generals with his uniform and pension. December 6, 1906 awarded the Order of St.. Vladimir 2nd degree.

Kvitnitsky died on October 3, 1907 in France , where he left for treatment.

His brothers: Victor (Lieutenant-General, Chief of the 28th Infantry Division ), Leonid (1828–1885, Lieutenant-General, Commander of the Caucasian Grenadier Division ) and Vladimir (colonel).
