Micrococcal nuclease

Micrococcal nuclease is an enzyme whose main property is the ability to break the primary structure of nucleic acids, in particular DNA , in the areas between nucleosomes .

In other words, micrococcal nuclease separates the nucleosomes from each other, destroying the portion of DNA connecting them, but without affecting the portion of DNA directly associated with histone proteins .

Micrococcal nuclease preparations are used in molecular biology to study chromosomal DNA molecules.
