Petrov, Ivan (counter)

Ivan Petrov (1823—?) - Russian phenomenal counter . Born in 1823 in a peasant serf family in the Kostroma province. At an early age, unable to read or write, he amazed those around him with his abilities to count and solve problems. At the age of 11, they underwent a thorough study in the general presence of the council of the Kostroma gymnasium. The 12 tasks proposed to him were solved by him, with the inability to read and write and in the complete absence of any information about the number system used, at an hour and 17 minutes, counting also the time for proposing tasks. In August of the same year, Petrov was subjected to a new study by Professor D. M. Perevoshchikov , who proposed 5 tasks; the simple problem of proportional division was solved in 30 seconds, the answer to the question about the number of seconds in a year followed after 3 minutes, the problem of quadratic equations, unavailable even for those who had completed the initial course of arithmetic, was solved in 17 minutes, etc. The problem of uncertain equations of the first degrees with two unknowns, proposed to Petrov during the first research, was brilliantly resolved by him in all cases of positive and positive solutions allowed by her.

In the same 1834, Petrov was introduced to Emperor Nicholas I when he visited the Kostroma gymnasium. The emperor ordered the director of the gymnasium to take him to his home to educate and teach reading, writing and languages, French and German. To provide for the boy in the future, he ordered a contribution of 1,000 rubles to be made to a credit institution. The further fate of Ivan Petrov is unknown.
