Series History
The first novel, entitled The New Girl, was published in 1989 . Since then, books have appeared on many bestseller lists, including USA Today [1] and Publisher Weekly [2] . In addition, the series was included in the list of best-selling youth novels of all time [3] .
In 1995, the series inspired the creation of a spin-off series entitled “Ghosts Of Fear Street”, written for a younger age, and in which the plots were more like “Horror” ( English Goosebumps ) - ghosts, vampires, monsters appeared in it , aliens and other representatives of paranormal creatures. Most books also have an unexpected or controversial ending.
In 1999, after another spin-off called Fear Street Seniors, Stein finished work on the series. In the summer of 2005, he released the Fear Street Nights trilogy as part of the project.
By 2010, more than 80 million copies of the novels of the series were sold in the world [4] .
Publications in Russia
In Russia, the books were published by the AST publishing house in the Horror series. Recently, AST published these books in the Fear series in the form of collected works from several short stories. In addition, 4 collections of 2 stories in each were first published in Russia in the mid-1990s.
Below is a list of short stories published in Russia in alphabetical order. The date of the first publication in Russia in the series “Horror” for teenagers is indicated in parentheses. It is also noteworthy that the Russian edition uses the same covers as the original American, with the difference that the cover images for many novels in the series are reversed.
Scene
The series takes place in the fictional city of Shadyside (in some books, translators translated the name of the city - Dark Valley) somewhere on the East Coast. The protagonists of the novels are teenagers, usually high school students, who are faced with tragic, sometimes mystical events. Although ghosts and spirits appear in some novels, the plot is based on one or a series of murders. Although some heroes also die in the horror series for children, the novels in this series describe the killings more severely.
The name of the series comes from one of the city streets, named after the ancient family of Fiars ( English The Fears ). Originally, their surname was pronounced “Fire” ( Fier ), but when rumors appeared that the family was cursed and the letters in their surname could be added to the word “fire”, Simon Fear changed his surname at the end XIX century. According to legend, the founders of the clan, Simon and his wife Angelica, brought a curse when they moved to Sheydeside after the Civil War . The curse takes its roots from Puritan times when the brothers Benjamin and Matthew Fire burnt Suzanne Goode and her mother Martha at the stake for allegedly engaging in witchcraft. The head of the family, William Hood, cursed the Fires, condemning their family to constant woes and a series of deaths. There was a fire in the family house that prevented the merger of the Fire and Hood families - it is believed that all Fire representatives died in that fire, putting an end to the curse. However, the events of many novels hinted that one of the brothers survived. The detailed history of the family is described in the spin-offs of the series called The Fear Street Saga .
As usual in Stein’s novels, the characters change in each book, although many characters (such as Suki (Suki) Thomas) are mentioned in other works of the series.
