Stepanovka ( Ukrainian: Stepanivka ) is a village in Ukraine , located in the Shakhtyorsk district of Donetsk region . Since 2014, it has been under the control of the self - proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic [1] .

General information

Population

According to the 2001 census, the population of the village amounted to 1389 people, of which 93.02% marked Ukrainian as their native language , 6.77% said Russian , and 0.21% said it was different [2] .

History

It was founded by Stepan Dmitrievich Ilovaisky , the son of the chief ataman of the Don General’s Army from the cavalry and cavalier Dmitry Ivanovich Ilovaysky at the end of the 18th century.

As of 1873, 1793 people lived in the settlement of the Marinovskaya volost of the Mius district of the Oblast of the Don Army, there were 272 farm households, 75 plows, 639 horses, 301 pairs of oxen, 1374 ordinary and 2977 fine-fleeced sheep.

According to the 1897 census, the number of inhabitants increased to 2,073 people (1,008 males and 1,065 females).

Warfare

Since the beginning of August 2014, during the war in the Donbass, fights were fought between the Ukrainian army and the rebels for the village.

According to the Ukrainian authorities, on August 10-11, Stepanovka was completely destroyed by the fire of Grad MLRS batteries. A number of sources stated that the shelling was carried out from Russian territory [3] , other sources said that fire was fired from territory controlled by the rebels [4] . According to the DNR militia, the village was actively bombarded by Ukrainian troops, including using the Uragan rocket launcher , one of the installations of which the rebels managed to destroy on August 11 [5] .
