Initially, Carnegie Technical Schools founded by Andrew Carnegie in 1900. In 1912, the school became the Carnegie Institute of Technology and after 4 years of study began to award bachelor's degrees . The university was created in 1967 by the merger of the Carnegie Institute of Technology and the Mellon Institute for Industrial Research.
The university is engaged in research in the field of science and technology, innovations in the fields of information technology , robotics and artificial intelligence . The university is also known in many other areas, including management , economics and linguistics . It has partnerships with IBM and other well-known companies.
The university has a branch in Qatar , joint projects in several countries around the world, including an IT training center at Innopolis University in the new science city Innopolis in Tatarstan .

Campus
The main campus is located five kilometers from downtown Pittsburgh between the areas of Chenley Park and Squirell Hill, Shadyside and Auckland. The campus area is 0.57 km 2 (140 acres ). In the west, it borders the University of Pittsburgh campus.
For decades, the center of student life on campus has been Skibo Hall. The original building of the 50s, made in the style typical of the period, was demolished and in its place a modern building suitable for the operation of wireless networks was erected.
