Rizokarpaso ( Greek Ριζοκάρπασο , tour. Dipkarpaz ) is a city in Cyprus located on the Karpassky Peninsula and being the largest settlement on it. Located in the northeastern part of the peninsula. Since 1974, it has been part of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus , which is not recognized by the international community, where it administratively belongs to the Trikomo region , although according to the administrative division of the Republic of Cyprus it is part of the Famagusta region .
The population of the city in 2006 was about 5,300 people. The main occupation of the population is agriculture, including tobacco cultivation. There is a tobacco factory.
Near the modern city, closer to the Mediterranean coast , in ancient times the city of Karpasia appeared, which became already in the 4th century the center of the bishopric, abolished by the Lusignans , who in 1222 resettled the Greek bishop of Famagusta in Rizocarpaso, which caused its growth. Risocarpaso, predominantly inhabited by the Greeks, became the center of the district. In 1974, the city was occupied by Turkish troops, which caused a massive outflow of the Greek population to the southern part of the island, although at present about 250 Greeks, mostly representatives of the older generation, live in the city under the protection of the UN mission, which makes the Greek community of Rizokarpaso the largest in the TRNC .
Among the attractions of the city are the churches of St. Sinesius, built during the Kingdom of Cyprus , which served as the residence of the bishop, and the Trinity Church. Not far from the city are the remains of the Agios Filon Basilica, built in the 5th century in the city of Aphrodision.
