Distribution

Most modern species ( Proteinini ) in the Northern Hemisphere. However, most modern tribes (the remaining 4 out of 5) are found in the Southern Hemisphere (all 15 of them are found in Argentina, Chile, Australia and New Zealand).

Description

The sizes are small (less than 3 mm), the body is wide, the proxies and metacoxes are transverse, wide, subconical. Tarsal formula (number of paw segments): 5-5-5 (in some genera in the Southern Hemisphere, 4-4-4). They live in fallen leaves, rotting mushrooms, carrion and excrement, although species of the tribe Nesoneini ( New Zealand and New Caledonia ) were found in decaying wood and under the bark of trees. In general, most species are believed to be saprophages, although some of them are possibly mycophages. Representatives of the tribe Anepiini , presumably, predators [1] [2] .

Systematics

About 230 species in 6 tribes and 11 genera [1] [2] . From the Mesozoic Burmese amber (99 Ma), the species of the mycophagous beetle Vetuproteinus cretaceus Cai, Newton & Thayer, 2016 (isolated in a separate tribe Vetuproteinini), the oldest representative of the entire subfamily, was described [3] .
