Historical Information
Ancient names of the river: Uuirma, Vuirama, Wirmina, Wirm. The modern name of the river comes from either the Celtic “Wyrmina” (“The Swift Stream”), or from the Retian “Wir-Ama” (“Mother River”). The first Indo-European settlements on the Wurm River appeared 4000 years ago during the Early Bronze Age (no later), as evidenced by the ancient tomb found in Obermenzing in 1910 during road works.
