The river basin area is 1299 km² (with ) or 862.2 km² (without Cartan) [1] [2] . The total length of the river is 85.1 km [3] . The source is located in the Wolfshagen district [4] .
In 2004, Stepenitz received the status of a conservation facility.
The tourist route “Gänsetour”, named after the ancient noble family Ganz zu Putlitz, runs along the river.
