The Oder River originates in the Harz National Park, 1.3 km northwest of Mount Actorman . Flowing south. Below the city, Bad Lauterberg turns west. It falls in Rum in the territory of the commune of Katlenburg-Lindau .

The river basin is 385 km² . The total length of the river is 56 km . The height of the source is 810 m. The height of the mouth is 131 m.

In 2007, between the towns of Scharzfeld and Katlenburg on the river, the Oderaue nature protection zone was formed.

The river system of the river is Rume → Laine → Aller → Weser .
