Mayer, Henry

Henry Meyer or Meyer ( born Henry Meyer ; 1923 , Dresden - December 18, 2006 , Cincinnati ) is an American violinist of German origin.

A gifted child, he gave concerts with his brother-pianist, at the age of eight he made his debut in Dresden with an orchestra. When the Nazis came to power, he was removed from his usual musical career due to his Jewish origin, studied for some time in Prague, then played in a special Orchestra of the Jewish Cultural Union. In 1943 he was arrested and sent to a concentration camp in Auschwitz , then in 1944 he was transferred to Sachsenhausen , from there to Buchenwald and finally to a concentration camp in Ordruf , where he managed to escape from the confusion of the last weeks of the war [3] . Meyer got into the American zone of occupation, then to Paris, where he studied for some time under the leadership of George Enescu , and in 1948 he emigrated to the United States , where he completed his education at the Juilliard School .

As a student, Mayer in 1948 joined the Lasalle Quartet as a second violin and performed as a member of this ensemble throughout its existence until its dissolution in 1987 , releasing many records and winning a number of prestigious awards. In addition, for some time, Mayer played in the NBC Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Arturo Toscanini .

As a teacher, Meyer taught at the Cincinnati Conservatory College , where, according to the recollections of one of his accompanists, Ira Rosenblum,

his lessons were always lively events: he could dance, sing, laugh with contagious enthusiasm, depicting - depending on the repertoire - humble villagers, reckless dance of gypsies, Parisian lovers ... [4]
