Devils Tower

“ Devils Tower ” [1] , or “ Devil Tower National Monument ” [2] ( eng. Devils Tower National Monument ) is a natural monument in the Bell-Fourch Valley [1] in the state of Wyoming , USA . It is a monolith of volcanic origin with a height of 1558 m above sea level (386 m above the river valley) and a relative height of 265 m. It is the first object that was recognized as a “national monument” to the USA [1] , having received its status from President Theodore Roosevelt on September 24, 1906 years .

The Devil's Tower was formed from a magmatic melt that rose from the depths of the Earth and froze in the form of six-sided columns (see Benard cells ). The age of the most ancient geological sediments represented on the territory of the monument of nature is estimated from 225 to 195 million years. The host rocks are represented by dark red sandstones , siltstones with shale interlayers.

In the cinema

  • The mountain appears in the Steven Spielberg film “ Close contacts of the third degree ” ( 1977 ) - this is where the contact with the aliens takes place, and one of the main characters builds a small copy of the tower at home.
  • The Devil's Tower is also filmed in Greg Mottola’s film Paul ( 2011 ).
