Vavilov, Peter Petrovich

Born in the city of Gorodishche Penza region. He graduated in 1941 from the Moscow Agricultural Academy. K.A. Timiryazev . Graduate student , assistant of the Department of Plant Production of the Moscow Agricultural Academy (1945-1948). Senior researcher in the climatology sector of the research base of the USSR Academy of Sciences in the Komi ASSR , scientific secretary of the presidium (1949-1951), deputy chairman of the presidium (1951-1956), chairman of the presidium (1956-1965) of the Komi branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences , simultaneously (1962-1965 ) Director of the Institute of Biology of this branch. Doctor of Agricultural Sciences (1964). Professor of the Department of Plant Production (1965-1971), Rector (1971-1978), Head of the Department of Plant Production (1978-1984) of the Moscow Agricultural Academy . Academician VASKHNIL (1973). President of the Supreme Agricultural Academy ( August 1, 1978 - December 15, 1984 ).

The main scientific works are devoted to crop production, introduction, plant breeding and radiobiology. The scientist paid special attention to the problems of feed production. He developed the scientific basis for creating a solid fodder base in the North - issues of the rational use of vapor used, enrichment of the species composition of the cultural flora. Bred a number of varieties and polyhybrids of sugar and fodder beets; for the first time in the USSR, he created a single-seeded variety of fodder beets. He conducted comprehensive studies of the effects of increased natural and artificial radiation on various components of natural biogeocenoses .

P.P. Vavilov is considered the main culprit for the widespread distribution of the hogweed Sosnowski , a malicious and dangerous (for human life and health) weed, in the European part of the former USSR and Eastern European CMEA member countries : East Germany , Bulgaria , Hungary , Poland , Czechoslovakia . He defended his dissertation on this plant and believed that the yield of its green mass would help restore post-war agriculture. ^{[2] [3] [4]}

Corresponding Member of the USSR Academy of Sciences (1979). Honorary Doctor of the Polish Agricultural Academy in Krakow (1978). About 450 scientific papers have been published, including 37 books and brochures. A number of works published abroad.

On September 2, 2015 in Smolensk, a memorial plaque was opened to P.P. Vavilov as the founder of the Smolensk branch of the K.A. Timiryazev Moscow Agricultural Academy.
