Description
Commuter rail systems differ, on the one hand, from heavy metro systems (Rapid transit) and from light rail / light rail / light rail systems, on the other.
Commuter rail systems are used, as a rule, by railways leased or bought out from private railway companies [1] . Many Commuter rail systems use diesel traction ( motor-carriage or locomotive ), but there are also electrified systems.
The longest commuter passenger route in the United States is from New York’s Pennsylvania Station to Montauk Station on Long Island [1] . The length is 186 km.
History
Suburban rail service, as well as passenger service in the United States in general, fell into decay after the Second World War . The crisis of commuter rail traffic fell in the 1950s - 1980s [1] . Later, the popularity of this type of public transport began to grow. Since then, many new Commuter rail systems have been opened, including in cities that had previously completely lost their rail service.
