Biography
In 1943-1945 he participated in the Second World War as a soldier.
In 1953 he graduated from the Department of Economics of the University of Wisconsin in Madison (USA).
In 1953-1957 - employee of the economic department on the board of IG Metall.
In 1958-1961 - Representative of trade unions in the Organization for European Economic Cooperation in Washington and Paris .
In 1960-1972 - Head of Continuing Education at IG Metall.
In 1961-1987 - Member of the German Bundestag .
In the years 1972-1974. - Parliamentary State Secretary at the Ministry of Economic Cooperation.
In 1974-1978 - Minister of Science and Technology.
In 1978-1982 - Minister of Finance of Germany,
in 1982 - Minister of Post and Communications.
In 1973-1984 - Member of the Board of the SPD,
in 1985-1987 - Federal Treasurer of the SPD.
In 1987-1997 - Chairman of the Board of the Trade Union Institute of Labor and Health (BGAG), simultaneously in 1986-1997. - Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the union-controlled Allgemeine Deutsche Direktbank AG (ING-DiBa), which is part of the trade union holding company ING Group NVdie.
