Open book - this concept refers either to the book of chess openings , or to the database of chess openings used by the chess program .
The opening books that make up the chess openings are significantly different from the literature on this game. They describe many major lines, such as the Sicilian Defense , the Spanish Party and the Queen's Gambit , as well as many non-standard variations of the main branches.
There are several types of opening guides:
- Guides on one specific debut.
- Guides containing a debut system or set.
- Guides giving general debut advice and direction.
- Perhaps complete encyclopedic debut guides.
- DVDs featuring debut guides.
The opening book is also used as the opening database for computer chess programs . Programs are greatly enhanced using electronic versions of debut books. This possibility eliminates the need for programs to calculate the best options for about the first ten moves of the game, when the position is significantly open and requires a lot of time to evaluate. As a result, computers occupy one of the strongest places, using minimal resources for their own calculation of moves.
Modern chess programs are designed to be controlled by a graphical user interface (GUI) such as Winboard , ChessBase or Arena through the UCI protocol or the chess program communication protocol (CECP). In this case, the opening book can often be used in the GUI, when the graphical user interface, if necessary, makes moves from the opening book on behalf of the program.
The debut book used by computers is often in the format of an indescribable set of documents or PGNs. Examples are the ChessBase .ctg format or the Pgn format and the .abk Arena format. One notable exception is the Polyglot debut book format, which is fully registered and implemented in an increasing number of programs.
