Biography

Hannu Mäkel was born into a family of teachers Väinö Mäkel and Evi Leinonen. He graduated from a pedagogical institute and taught 2 years of Finnish language and literature at evening school. He began his literary work in 1965 with the novel “All the Time on the Road” ( Fin. Matkoilla kaiken aikaa ), since then he published more than 20 novels, one of which (“Master”, Fin. Mestari: Eino Leinon elämä ja kuolema ) in 1995 year was awarded the main national literary prize - "Finland" .

Meakel also owns several collections of short stories and essays, 19 collections of poems, plays, scripts for television and radio shows. About 20 years (1967-1986) H. Mäkelya worked at the major Finnish publishing house Otava , where he headed the department of fiction. He edited a number of collections of Finnish writers and poets. He also took an active part in publishing an anthology of Finnish literature.

The greatest fame at home and abroad was brought to the writer by his books for children - the fabulous novels “ Mr. Au ” ( Fin. Herra Huu , 1973 ), “The Horse That Lost Points” ( Fin. Hevonen joka hukkasi silmälasinsa , 1977 ), “Fearless Pekka "( Fin. Pekka Peloton , 1982 ) and others. Myakel's tales are full of good humor, they are a bit naive, but perhaps that is why they are so loved by readers.

The story “Mr. Au” was published in the USSR in 1976 , and published in Russia in 1980 in the literary retelling of Eduard Uspensky . In 1979, an animated series based on the novel was released .

H. Myakkel’s novel “The Horse Who Lost Points” and “Fearless Pekka”, translated by Eleanor Joffe , were published in Russian in 2001 .

Hannu Mäkel repeatedly visited the republics of the USSR and Russia . At the age of 30, he studied Russian. He was married to Svetlana Aksyonova, philologist, journalist (St. Petersburg).

In September 2014, Mäkel accused the Finnish media of military hysteria against Russia. He stated that he was shocked by “Western unlimited Russophobia” [3] .

May 20, 2016 the writer was awarded the honorary title of academician in the field of art. The appointment was signed by Finnish President Sauli Niinistö .
