Until 1990, in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus , numbers similar to those in the southern part of the island were used (black symbols on a yellow background: 2 letters and 3 numbers).
In 1990, in the Republic of Cyprus, another two letters were added to the previous two letters, but the numbers in the TRNC did not change.
In 1997, the flag of Northern Cyprus was added to the left side of the issue and the background color was changed (white was used instead of yellow). In addition, the following changes have been made:
- the background color of the rolling machines has become red, the number of letters has become 3
- the background color of taxi cars remained yellow, the number of letters became 3 (the numbers became similar to the numbers in the Republic of Cyprus, in force from 1990 to 2003)
