Description

The source of the Flint River is located in the west of central Georgia, in the southern part of Fulton County . Then it flows through pipes under the runways of the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport [1] . Further, the river flows south through the agricultural areas of the state and crosses , about 16 km west of the city of .

In southwestern Georgia, the river flows through the center of Albany , the largest city on the river. Near the border with the state of Florida, the Flint River merges with the Chattahuchi River , forming Lake , from which the only Apalachicola River flows, which flows further south and flows into the Gulf of Mexico .

History

Throughout its history, the Flint River has been prone to floods [1] . In 1994, during a flood caused by the tropical hurricane Alberto [1] , the river level in Albany rose by 13 m, as a result of which more than 23 thousand inhabitants of the city had to be evacuated. In 1998, another serious flood occurred in Albany, but not as large as in 1994 [2] . Other major floods occurred in 1841 and 1925.

The Flint River is one of four rivers in the southeastern United States, where plants from the genus Gimenokallis [3] are preserved in significant quantities.
