Short Biography
George Engelman was born in Frankfurt . He was the oldest child in the family. He became interested in botany for the first time at the age of 15, but studied medicine and became a doctor of medical sciences in 1831 . In the same year he left for the USA. In 1840, he returned to Germany, where he married his relative Dorothea Horstman, after which he again went to America.
Several plant species are named after George Engelman, including Carex engelmannii , Crataegus engelmannii , Echinocereus engelmannii , Salvia engelmannii , Picea engelmannii and Pinus engelmannii .
