West American Jay [1] ( lat. Gymnorhinus cyanocephalus ) is a bird of the corvidae family , the only representative of the genus of West American jays ( Gymnorhinus ).

Description

The West American jay has a bluish-gray plumage, a short tail, a sharp, black beak and black legs. The goiter has white plumage. male and female are colored the same. The male has a slightly longer beak than the female; its plumage on the head is darker. The wings are relatively long in comparison with the body.

Distribution

The distribution area is located in mountain forests in western North America. From Oregon and Montana all the way to the north of Baja California and Arizona and east to the west of Oklahoma . Often you can find large groups near the pines , especially during the incubation period.

Nutrition

It feeds mainly on the seeds of single coniferous pine (Pinus monophylla) and edible pine (Pinus edulis), as well as insects, nuts, fruits and berries. He opens with his sharp beak the pine cones and pecks the seeds. For the winter hides seeds in the ground.

Reproduction

It builds a cup-shaped nest mainly on pines or oaks . In clutch from 2 to 5 eggs. Hatching lasts from 16 to 18 days. Chicks become independent after 3 weeks.
