Mauritstadt ( niderl. Mauritsstad ) or Mauritiopolis ( niderl. Mauritiopolis ) - a former city, the capital of the Dutch Brazil , now part of the city of Recife .
The city was built on the island of Antonio Vaz opposite the then small village of Recife (now a district of the city of Recife), according to the plan of the Dutch architect Peter Post. The city is named after Governor Johann Moritz van Nassau-Siegen , who founded the city.
Mauritstadt was the cultural center of the Dutch estates in America, the first botanical garden in America, a zoo and a museum were built here.
