Story

Polyphonic storyline: the fate of several representatives of the intelligentsia living in the 30s in the USSR intertwine in the very center of preparation for a large military parade in Moscow.
Former noblewoman, Anna, who became the wife of an employee of the NKVD . She is raped by a high official to whom her husband submits. The husband cannot and does not want to do anything. In desperation, deciding to leave the city, Anna meets the porter at the train station Gosha and falls in love with him.
Her friend, the famous Lawyer, defends the fallen woman guilty of several murders, so he is interested in the case, which beckons him like a breakthrough. He seeks the present and does not find.

... Gorbachevskaya turned out to be the only unexpected substance in this world. ...
... He feels that the time has passed. But he doesn’t like it. He was taught to protect killers from people, and now, soon, it will be necessary to protect people from killers. And this is a completely different profession.

A Friend of the Lawyer is a Writer who is not allowed to write sincerely. The writer tries to protect the writer from the authorities (Makovetsky), a characteristic character who actively adapts to circumstances. He comes up with an ostentatious show to “save” the Writer from the real charge. The writer writes a book called "Breakthrough", and does not find a more understandable synonym for the title. The abyss, the abyss, everything is not certain.

 - I need a “breakthrough”, but one that, when translated into any other language, it is readable. And it was read very accurately. Like a breakthrough.
- And about what? - asked Anna.
- About the fact that in Russia, right now, in Russia, the very main thing that everyone is afraid of is not there. It is conditional. It is not a person, not a concept. It is simply nothing. But nothing that draws in and destroys is frightening. Cripples. Like a breakthrough. Low. By smell. Just. Take a look.
He took a stone, not a small one, a real one, and with all its might, threw it far beyond the fence of the mansion. ...

The ballerina, dearly beloved by the Writer, is surrounded by the courtship of that very official - Anna's rapist. Having succumbed to the attention paid to him with chic - the Ballerina, like Anna, becomes his victim, the terrible circle closes again, another fate flies into the breach.
The lawyer escapes from the system, returning to his roots. The writer tragically decides his fate. Anna, having crippled her face as a result of a quarrel with Gosha, leaves for him.
All the plots are connected by an anecdotal, albeit true, story about how a zealous stallion was prepared for Marshal Budyonny for the parade and, in the end, having put on a fake and painted, they “slipped” the tested mare.

Criticism

Elena Plakhova, "Session", No. 9, 1994 [2]

Dykhovichny takes the “Breakthrough” to spite the enemies and the envy of the younger “postmodernists” - a picture that immediately becomes a cult for the circle of Greenway fans and other connoisseurs of neo-baroque.

Alexander Timofeevsky, Moscow News , No. 26, June 28, 1992

Dykhovichny does not reconstruct time, but creates an image of the past, not at all embarrassed by deliberate anachronisms: the action takes place in the thirties, at the same time at the fountain "Friendship of Peoples", erected at the very end of the fifties. ... Two incompatible realities, “Pyryevskaya” and “historical”, are combined into one. But in the end, not only the past gains the status of the past, but - more importantly - the myth gains the status of a myth.
