15th Army (USSR)

The 15th Army is an operational combined arms formation ( association , army ) as part of the Red Army and the Soviet Army of the USSR Armed Forces .

Content

First Formation

The 15th Army was formed on February 11, 1940 on the basis of the Southern Group of Forces of the 8th Army , after which during the Soviet-Finnish War it took part in hostilities from February 12 to March 13 in the northeastern Ladoga area in the Salmi - Pitkäranta region - Kitilä - Käsnyaselkä .

After the end of the Finnish war on March 28, the army’s command was transformed into the command of the Arkhangelsk military district .

Second Formation

The 15th army of the second formation was formed in July 1940 as part of the Far Eastern Front . Army headquarters was in Birobidzhan .

Until August 1945, the army defended the Far Eastern borders of the USSR. Since August 9, during the Soviet-Japanese War, the 15th Army took part in the Sungarian operation , during which the advanced units entered Harbin on August 20. Until the end of August, the 15th Army conducted military operations to destroy the Japanese Kwantung Army, and on September 2, 1945 ended the hostilities.

Third Formation

The 15th Army of the third formation was formed on April 16, 1953 on the basis of the Directorate of the Far Eastern Military District . Army headquarters was in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk . The army included troops deployed in the Sakhalin Region ( Sakhalin Island and the Kuril Islands ) [1] :

  • 85th rifle corps consisting of 3 separate brigades: 2nd rifle brigade, 7th and 15th machine gun and artillery brigades (Kuril Islands, corps headquarters - Kurilsk ),
  • 87th Infantry Corps as part of 3 infantry divisions: 79th (then 79th Motor Rifle, 264th (since 1955 - 41st Motor Rifle), 342th (since 1955 - 56th motorized rifle) (on Sakhalin, headquarters - Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk).
  • 5th separate machine gun and artillery division ( Sovetskaya Gavan );
  • 203rd separate heavy tank regiment ( Aniva ).

In 1960, the army headquarters was transferred to Khabarovsk , and units in the Khabarovsk Territory and the Amur Region were subordinate to it.

In the period from 07/27/1967 to 08/19/1969. the army was called the 18th combined-arms army , then it was returned to its previous name .

In the early 1990s, the 15th Army was disbanded, the remaining troops were transferred to the 43rd Army Corps .
