Education

  • 1985 - graduated from Frostburg University of Maryland, received a bachelor's degree in accounting.
  • 1992 - received a master's degree in environmental engineering from the University of Maryland.

Biography

After graduation, he taught at American schools in Morocco , in Saudi Arabia . At the time of admission to the astronaut squad, NASA taught mathematics and social sciences at the International American School in Bucharest .

Since November 2, 2003, he underwent examinations and interviews at the Lyndon Johnson Space Center .

On May 6, 2004, he was enrolled in the NASA astronaut squad as a candidate for “flight specialist - teacher” under the project “ ”.

In October 2007, he was appointed “flight specialist” as part of the crew of the STS-119 mission of the Discovery spacecraft, with a planned launch in November 2008.

STS-119

From March 15 to March 28, 2009 he participated in the space flight of the Discovery spacecraft, under the STS-119 mission program as a flight specialist. The docking with the ISS was carried out on March 17 , from March 25, before the landing, the shuttle made an autonomous flight. The total duration of the flight was 12 days 19 hours 29 minutes 41 seconds.

During the flight, R. Arnold made two work exits into open space:

  • March 19, 2009, work was done on the installation of the ISS starboard section of the starboard side of the ISS. The duration of the release is 6 hours 7 minutes.
  • March 23, 2009, work was carried out on the lubrication of the end gripper of a mechanical manipulator " Canadarm ". The duration of the release is 6 hours 27 minutes.

ISS 55/56

On February 22, 2018, the Interdepartmental Commission at a meeting in the Russian Cosmonaut Training Center (CPC), Richard Arnold, was approved as the main crew of the Soyuz MS-08 and ISS-55 / 56 [1] .

March 21, 2018 at 17:44 UTC launched as a flight engineer-2 of the Soyuz MS-08 spacecraft together with Oleg Artemyev and Andrew Feistel . March 23 at 19:40 UTC the ship successfully docked to the Russian segment of the ISS .

During the flight, he performed three EVAs:

  • March 29, 2018 - the installation of modern equipment for wireless communications on the outside of the American Tranquility module and the replacement of outdoor cameras that monitor the Earth. Stay in outer space 6 h 10 min.
  • May 16, 2018 - the operation to replace the pumps of the temperature control system of the station, external surveillance cameras of the Destiny laboratory module and the receiver of the communication system. Stay in outer space 6 h 31 min
  • June 14, 2018 - installation of high-resolution cameras on the outer surface of the American Harmony module , designed to monitor the process of docking Starliner and Dragon cobras. Stay in outer space 6 h 49 min.

He returned to Earth on October 4, 2018. The time spent in space in the second flight is 196 days 18 hours 0 minutes.

The total time spent in space after two flights is 209 days 13 hours 29 minutes.
