The President of Rwanda is the head of state in Rwanda , elected nationally for a seven-year term, leading the country and appointing the head of government . The post first appeared after the overthrow of the last king Kigeli V in 1961 , when Rwanda became a republic within the Belgian Trust Territory Rwanda-Urundi , and since 1962 an independent state.
